The Compressioni by Alessi is a brass container shaped by an unexpected process: a metal sheet is first turned on a lathe, then deliberately compressed. With Compressioni, Paolo Ulian investigates a fresh way of working metal sheet, turning a technical operation into a distinctive visual language.
The project includes a basket, a centerpiece, and an “unexpected object” that powerfully captures the research Ulian developed alongside the master metal spinner who supported the process. Each piece is lathe-formed first, then compressed to reach its final profile. Over successive trials, the deformations created by pressure prove partially controllable: the folds that gather at the base settle into geometric patterns—square, hexagonal, octagonal, pentagonal—introducing a surprising sense of order while keeping every piece one of a kind.
